TEMPEH BACON SANDWICH

A vegan BLT is possible! Thanks to slices of tempeh and a good marinade, you can recreate this famous sandwich without an animal having suffered for it.


INGREDIENTS for the tempeh bacon

8 ounces tempeh

1 tbsp avocado oil

3 tbsp tamari sauce

2 tbsp maple syrup

Pinch of sea salt

2 tsp paprika


INGREDIENTS for the sandwich

Bread

Tomato

Lettuce

Vegan mayo


STEPS

1. Preheat the oven to 400 °F.

2. Slice the tempeh in strips, you should have about 12 pieces of tempeh.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, tamari, maple syrup, salt and paprika.

4. In a baking dish or rimmed plate, add the tempeh and toss the sauce on top. Use a pastry brush to coat each piece.

5. Let marinate for 15 minutes, flipping halfway.

6. Transfer tempeh (while carefully reserving the excess marinade) to a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

7. Remove from the oven, flip and brush with the reserved marinade. Put back in the oven and bake for another 10 minutes until browned.

8. Toast your bread, then layer with vegan mayo, slices of tomato, lettuce and 3-4 tempeh slices.
